Grandpa’s Toolbox
Coming Soon! From awls to zip ties, Grandpa's Toolbox: Tools A to Z, invites young readers to explore the alphabet through tools. Simple collage illustrations introduce hand and power tools and what they are used for: cutting, sanding, fastening, and more!
The inspiration came when we moved into a new house. My dad, who is very handy, came to help install a new light fixture. My three-year-old son was so excited to see that Grandpa brought his toolbox to our house. My son got out his own Fisher Price toolbox and “helped” with the project.
For weeks after, he asked to go to Grandpa’s house and play with Grandpa’s toolbox. I wanted to write a book that reflected the sweet connection between my dad and my son. I also wanted to write the kind of book my son would love to read. Right now, he loves simple stories about the types of things and activities he sees every day.
I took a lot of art classes in college and especially enjoyed some tissue paper collage projects that were based on Eric Carle’s process. It was a lot of fun to get back into art after a long hiatus!
I’m finalizing the artwork and experimenting with adding some digital embellishments to the paper collages.
